Understood.

our original post was in answer to Greasemonkey and we said;

 '', welcome to the world of SUP.  I'm sure that you'll love it; it is easier for sure than shortboarding or even long boarding for that matter, but before you put your hand in your pocket and take out some of your hard earned cash, beg, borrow or steal someone else's board to make sure that you like the feeling.  These boards are not cheap and maybe, just maybe, you won't get along with stand up paddle boarding.

You can buy this board from me; joking of course, but it's a case in point.  It's the most expensive Naish 2009 SUP board (around $1,800 retail) and snapped in half in a small wave after being used 6 times - Naish don't want to know about it - they have not even sent their rep to see the board!!  When we looked into the board - we see no stringers (strengthening) or any kind of reinforcement.

Do some research (we are now) before you spend biggies.  We are looking to buy several for a rental pool, but they sure as hell will not be made by Naish.

Here are photos taken of the broken board;

You can see that apart from the foam, there's nothing else keeping the board in one piece.

WOW, How long often has that Naish SUP been used?

Any heavy abuse before it broke?

Did you have it in a rental pool at your place?

Update is that we have been waiting for the Naish rep to visit since the board was broken.  He is about 500 metres away from us, but did not come and take a look so far.

Naish themselves are ignoring our emails - unimpressive.   Angry

Hi All,

I was about to purchase a Naish Mana. I saw a thread about it on Standup Zone Forum before seeing this blog. I then left a question on Standup Zone Forum referencing this webpage. Today I checked the Zone forum and my question wasn't posted. What's even worse is that they canceled my registration and erased any posts I had on that board. Apparently they must be controlled by Naish and don't want any negative press. It backfired - I will never buy a Naish now and will never recommend one.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Chandler

Same here, something very fishy going on on that forum, it's just plain wrong when someone pretends to be running a forum community, but then doesn't disclose his advertising / friend / employer - whatever relationship with Naish.

Seeing those pics and the removal of the postings on that forum have also turned me very against buying a Naish SUP board, now or in the future.

And I ain't going back to that forum either. Angry

(besides I like this forum with the speedo thread  Tongue )

Clicking on the thumbnails of the broken Naish photos - there's nothing inside....... w.t.f.?  Are they all built like that  Huh  Anyone who's broken another type of board can confirm the construction techniques normally?

I was under the impression that they have a stringer or some other reinforcement.  Such a big board as an SUP, of course will snap easily even in lame conditions if they are built like that.   Cry

Maybe as SUP'ing is relatively new, the manufacturers are still in the R and D stage and mistakes are being made.  That's not an excuse of course and Naish should at the very least be investigating the break.  I can't believe that the Rep has not been to look at the board Swell Surf Camp - is that still the case?

Douchebag admin at Standupzone has been deleting threads again, that's why I registerd here. I hope the admin here doesn't give in to SUP brands forcing to take negative stuff down.

No Naish for me.

Chrissie - yes that is still the case.  No answer from emails to Naish - they do not want to know.  If boards really are in R and D still as might appear to be the case, then the best thing Naish and other companies can do is to accept that when an almost brand new board breaks in 'lame' circumstances as ours did, they have a duty of care to their clients.  Quietly replace the board, avoid the bad publicity and above all else, make changes to the board's construction.

I noticed today on Stand Up Zone Forum that someone else is unhappy with a Starboard and they tried to ask a reasonable question about warranty issues - the Admin at SUZ will not allow the thread to continue.  I hope that Pete Cresswell who asked the pertinent question about warranties, will find the SUP Heaven site and ask his question here.  This is a relatively new website I guess, but the way the Admin works at the other forum, his days must surely be numbered as more and more people find his forum full of censorship and 'pet' topics only.  Waiting for the swell in Cabarete.....  Kiss

Hey there, just wanted to throw my two cents into the pot. I have had 2 Naish boards over the past 2 years (11'6" and 11'4" wood veneers). I am by no means an advanced SUPer or surfer, but enjoy getting out in the decent surf near my home. I have taken both boards into some questionable conditions and not had a problem with breakage or anything else. I have even taught my wife and friends how to SUP with them in small shorebreak with no problems. In my opinion these boards are built very well, having seen some other brands up close.

Having said that, I also know that shit happens. Boards break. I have broken a couple of longboards over the years and dealt with the sad fact that it was my fault, not the shaper. There is a certain amount of responsibility you have to take when you break a board. No matter how small the surf, the fact that these SUPs are so damn big means they are more susceptible to breakage. It is simple physics. On the other hand, sometimes in the world of manufacturing there are mistakes or inconsistencies.

I can't imagine how many SUPs are produced worldwide, but I can guess there are probably a few bad apples that make it out into the public's hands. Unfortunately when it happens to you, you want it fixed and fixed fast. I don't blame the guy who has to deal with a brand new board being snapped in two for being angry. It sucks. But I honestly have a hard time thinking there is some sort of conspiracy with Naish as a company. Come on.

I have read a lot of other posts on other forums and it seems to me that if there was a widespread problem with Naish boards, there would be a lot of other guys out there bitching. Maybe your posts were deleted because it seems more like brand bashing than constructive criticism. In the end, everyone has a right to speak their mind. I just feel that there have been a lot of generalizations and misinformed statements in this thread. Agaim, my two cents... Thanks for listening.

Hi Thumb42,

I am sure that there are thousands of Naish boards across the world working very well  - there are some on the beach here in Cabarete that have been working well for the last two years.

The board we bought was one of those rogue boards - it broke in lame conditions after being used 6 times.

There are some other facts here that disappointed us with that particular board.  It was their most expensive model which snapped on a 1 meter high wave.  The rep did not bother to walk 500 metres to take a look at the board, where if he had, he would have seen that apart from the break, the board was perfect - no impact damage to be seen.  Anyhow, he did not come to look, though we asked him 3 times.

Furthermore, Naish still owe us $250 USD for shipping the wrong board to us in the first place.  They don't give a damn - we are not impressed and we are glad for forums like this where we can publicize poor service.  You and any one else who reads this, can then make an informed decision about whether or not to buy a Naish board.

Take a good look at the photos - particularly check the construction of that board and then decide whether you would put your hand in your pocket and take out $1,800 to pay for one.

We are currently looking to replace them with another model.
